One of Britain's top judges has called for estranged fathers with expensive homes to pay more towards the upbringing of their children.

The current child support system sees payments calculated on parents' taxable income and does not take their assets into account.

But Mr Justice Mostyn said more generous 'lump sum' payments should be ordered if wives are left at a disadvantage.

It came as he ruled on a case where a woman was awarded just £7 per week from her former partner, who is a multi-millionaire.
