This is an interesting article that looks at the current trends in relation to marriage and the possibility of extending civil partnerships to hetero couples.

However, what strikes me is that some of the couples interviewed appear to hold the mistaken belief that ending a civil partnership is easier then ending a marriage.

Apart from not being able to rely on the fact of adultery as a ground when ending a civil partnership - there is no difference and the paperwork is almost identical.

I don't think there would be any benefit to extending civil partnerships to hetero couples, if there is any area of family law that needs reviewing, in my view it's cohabitation because of the fact there's no specific area of family law that governs cohabiting couples when they split.

A judicial review takes place in January 2016 - so watch this space for further updates.

In the meantime, if you've any questions about divorce and/or civil partnerships, please get in touch with one of the team's family lawyers.
