Recent changes have meant that divorce petitions are now issued at regional divorce centres.

For us family lawyers in Oxford, we now send divorce papers to Bury St Edmunds, apart from in certain, exceptional circumstances such as the need for a divorce petition to be issued urgently.

The reasoning behind the changes were to speed up the divorce process, but my experience so far has been rather hit and miss.

On average, it's taken at least 3-4 weeks for the paperwork to be issued and on one occasion despite the court advising papers had been sent out they were never received and the court had to re-issue the paperwork.

It's understandable that it will take time for the new divorce centres to operate smoothly, but it's not easy for clients who are keen to progress their divorce as quickly as they can.
