Pope Francis has said that the decline of marriage is part of the cycle of family breakdown, where children of separated parents are concerned about risking marriage.

In my view there are a lot more reasons why young couples are choosing to live together rather than to marry, such as focusing on saving to buy a home together or simply the fact that society is more supportive of couples cohabiting than it used to be.

The risk is that some people think that by living together rather than marrying they are protecting themselves financially in the event of a separation, which is not strictly true, particularly where they have children together. I regularly meet with clients who want to find out more about their financial rights and responsibilities in those circumstances so that they can make informed decisions.

It is good to hear that the Pope also supports equality in the work place for women though!
