I have to agree with the psychotherapist Betsy Ross in this article about separating parents.

It is not easy to put aside the hurt and anger of a break up, but a divorce itself does not end a separated couple's relationship if they also have children together.

In my experience it can help the parents' relationship a lot to have a clear pattern for the day to day arrangements for the children. If this can be agreed between the parents themselves then this is good news.

Many of my clients find that matters only really settle down once they have those arrangements recorded a bit more formally, for example by way of a letter from me to the other parent that they can both refer to in future if necessary, which in turn can help to avoid the costs of possible court proceedings.
