My father is engaged to be married for the second time. My siblings and I are anxious that, should the marriage not work out, a sizeable chunk of my father’s assets would be lost in the divorce. This is not just because we don’t want to lose our inheritance, but because we have children of our own who could well do with the money as they enter adulthood in the future.Even more importantly, we fear that our father will struggle to meet potential care home costs in his old age if that becomes necessary and he has had to split his assets.
